Nonlinear Inverse Compton Scattering: A Path to Bright Narrow-Band Sources of Gamma-Rays and X-Rays

Аннотация: This presentation, based on a doctoral dissertation, examines inverse Compton scattering as the physical foundation for bright narrow-band sources of gamma-rays and X-rays, intended for applications in nuclear photonics, materials science, and related fields. It discusses both linear and nonlinear regimes, spectral formation, and the main mechanisms of spectral broadening: angular and energy divergence of beams, focusing, and pulse duration, with additional ponderomotive broadening and radiation effects in the nonlinear regime. Practical analytical formulas for total photon yield and brightness are provided, along with guidelines for selecting collimation and source parameters for a desired spectral linewidth. Methods of numerical simulation (electron trajectories and radiation calculation) and their verification are presented.
Using examples from source design based on a laser-plasma accelerator and for the NRC Kurchatov Institute project, the role of weak nonlinearity even at low intensities is demonstrated. The generation of harmonics, the influence of the pulse envelope and carrier phase, angular momentum transfer, and signatures of radiation reaction are considered separately. The talk concludes with methods for line narrowing in nonlinear scattering (chirping and polarization window techniques), which enhance spectral purity and suggest specific operational regimes for experiments.
