We solve the problem of maximizing population transfer in a three-level $\Lambda$ quantum system
and highlight the role of singular control to exploit minimum dissipation paths for longer available durations.
We also present approximate solutions using the spin to spring mapping and for large dissipation rates. We finally
discuss briefly the application of the optimal scheme to atomic and semiconductor systems.
