Abstract: The phenomenon of steam explosion occurs when a high-temperature melt interacts with an easily boiling liquid (water). The study of explosive fragmentation of individual melt droplets in a volume of water is of interest from the point of view of revealing the mechanisms of energy transfer during a steam explosion, including the conversion of thermal energy into the mechanical work of steam expansion. The report presents mathematical models of multiphase flows with movable interphase boundaries and phase transitions (VOF method) in solving non-stationary problems with heat exchange and evaporation, and their numerical implementation is considered. The mechanisms of fragmentation of droplets of high-temperature melts in water during the collapse of a vapor film separating the melt from water have been established. The results of numerical calculations are analyzed from the point of view of hydrodynamic and thermophysical aspects of emerging multiphase interactions.
