Abstract: The optimal control of the solidification process in metal casting is considered. The mathematical model is based on a three-dimensional two-phase initial-boundary value problem of the Stefan type. The mathematical formulation of the optimal control problem is given. The problem is solved numerically by direct optimization methods. The numerical results are described and analyzed. Some of the results are illustrated by plots.
