Abstract: A model of upper mantle convection in the zone of immersion of a cold lithospheric plate (subduction) into the upper Earth layer is developed. Issues of constructing the initial distributions of model variables are discussed. Computational schemes for solving model equations are presented. The calculation of the dynamics of mantle convection and the reorganization of its structure are performed in terms of the variables vorticity–stream function, and the calculation of the dynamics of slab immersion is based on the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A series of computational experiments is carried out.

Key words: mantle convection, Stokes’ equations, heat and mass transfer, fictitious domain method, smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH).
