Abstract:
A one of the specific features of hypersonic flow around the blunted head of
an object discovered by the computer simulation of aerodynamics of high-speed
flight and called the “carbuncle effect” is studied. The following question
is analyzed and discussed: is the carbuncle a specific numerical effect
related to the discretization of a continuous problem or is the carbuncle
a physical reality that manifests itself during high-speed motion in
the Earth's atmosphere at large altitudes.
