Abstract: This article examines new directions in physical research: the study of the weak interactions of elementary particles using optical methods. Calculations of the effects of parity nonconservation in heavy atoms are discussed and an experiment, in which parity nonconservation in atoms and the weak interaction of electrons and nucleons arising from neutral currents were first observed, is described.
