Abstract:
An historical review is given of cosmic ray research carried out at the P. N. Lebedev Institute from the time the Institute entered the field to the present. The key stages and directions of the research are outlined. The pioneering studies on the nuclear cascade process in extensive air showers and on the Vavilov–Cherenkov radiation are discussed. Some work on the origin of the cosmic rays is reviewed. The latest data on superhigh energy particle detection at the Pierre Auger Observatory and HiRes installation are presented.
