Abstract: The semiclassical theory of light scattering by a dilute gas Bose–Einstein condensate is examined, with special attention paid to the key role of the momentum recoil imparted to atoms by photons, a phenomenon that disturbs the interferential quenching of superradiant scattering.

Keywords: Rayleigh scattering, superradiant scattering, Bose–Einstein condensate, superradiant reflection.
