On the creation of the first ruby laser in Moscow

Abstract: The paper describes the history of the creation of the first ruby laser in 1961 at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Appendices present a fragment of FIAN's 1961 annual report and a talk at the Third International Congress on Quantum Electronics (1963), in which one of the first scientific results obtained with a laser is described.
