Abstract:
A study is made of the instability of a non-self-sustaining glow discharge after the ionizing source is switched off. With a view to elucidating the mechanism of this instability, the reduction in the gas density under the action of the discharge current pulse is measured and it is shown that this reduction is insufficient to explain breakdown by Townsend ionization.
