Extremal problems arising in the theory of van der Waals forces

Abstract: The properties of quantum-mechanical systems are described in the form of certain equalities or inequalities imposed on the dynamic polarizability. Two analytic functions are constructed in the form of given recursion relations, and these can be used to determine upper and lower bounds of the dynamic polarizability if information about the system is given. The theory is used to calculate van der Waats constants.
