Abstract: We obtain the exact solution to the problem on a relaxing rotation of a solid (a cylinder) and the viscous fluid surrounding it that is at rest at infinity. A series of nontrivial peculiarities of the dynamics of this hydromechanical system is revealed. In particular, we prove that the fluid can move at a velocity exceeding that of the boundary of the solid.

Keywords: solid, viscous fluid, free relaxing motion, wave of maximum fluid velocity.
