Abstract:
The different aspects of the current concept of aromaticity, which is based on the advances in the synthesis of aromatic systems and a study of their properties by experimental physical techniques and theoretical quantum-mechanical methods, are examined. Magnetic, structural, and energy properties, but not reactivity, can serve as criteria of aromaticity as characteristics of the electronic structure of cyclic conjugated systems, stabilisation of which is due to a cyclic delocalisation of electrons. A wider interpretation on which ideas about multiple types of aromaticity are based is unjustified and unsuitable. The bibliography includes 197 references.
