Abstract:
Data obtained in studies on the chemistry of a vigorously developing class of conjugated compounds (methylenequinones) are surveyed. The structure of these compounds and the influence of substituents on their properties and reactivity are discussed. Typical methods of synthesis of methylenequinones are described and the mechanism of their formation as well as the interconversions of methylenequinones and the corresponding phenols in radical and heterolytic reactions are considered.
