Abstract:
The energy relations governing the interaction of the uranyl ion with acido-ligands in a series of anhydrous crystalline uranyl complex salts are examined. Using the ideas concerning the electronegativity of the interacting species, the amount of ionic character of the bonds between UO22+ and anions has been estimated (approximately 60–70%), which makes it possible to calculate the contribution of the electrostatic interaction to the crystal lattice energies of the anhydrous salts. It is shown that the stretching vibration frequencies of the uranyl ion in its complexes with acido-ligands are in no way correlated with the basicity and the electronegativity of the ions. The vibrational characteristics of the uranyl ion depend on many parameters (the structure of the complex, the symmetry of the molecule, the nature of the acido-ligand, the outer-sphere cation, etc.).
