Abstract: The theory of the coupled chemical diffusion of ions and electrons in solids under the influence of the gradient of the degree of deviation from the stoichiometric composition is described consistently on the basis of the phenomenological and statistical-thermodynamic approaches. Within the framework of the model of non-interacting defects, the behaviour of crystals with the following types of disorder is examined: Frenkel', structural, Schottky, Wagner, impurity, and electronic disorder. Account has been taken of the influence of the degeneracy of the electrons. The main principles of the experimental methods for the determination of the coupled chemical diffusion coefficient are described and the experimental data are compared with the theory.
