Abstract:
The stages in the development of the chemistry of piperidines with a sterically hindered nitrogen atom and the practical importance of compounds of this class are examined. The methods of synthesis of 2,2,6,6-tetra-alkylpiperidines published in the literature, and their chemical properties and reactions are surveyed: processes occurring without the growth of a carbon skeleton, condensations with the formation of new C–C bonds, and reactions involving a change in the heterocyclic skeleton of the molecules. The characteristics of the stereochemistry and in particular of the conformations of 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidines are analysed. The bibliography includes 174 references.
