Abstract:
Experimental data on the oxidation of organic compounds by peroxides and other oxidants with participation of cytochrome P-450 from different natural sources are described sytematically and critically. The role of cytochrome P-450 in the oxidative dealkylation of N-alkylamines and ethers by hydroperoxides and also its involvement in the peroxide oxidation of aromatic compounds, saturated aliphatic acids, steroids, and other substrates is discussed. Attention is concentrated on the comparison of the mechanism of the oxidation of organic compounds in the complete liver enzyme system, incorporating cytochrome P-450, cytochrome P-450 reductase, and phospholipids as well as NADPH and O2, and the mechanism of the oxidation of organic compounds by hydroperoxides with participation of cytochrome P-450 alone.
