The Estance Method

A. Ya. Gokhshtein

Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow

Abstract: A method based on the measurements of estance – the derivative of the surface tension of a conducting solid with respect to an electrical variable – is proposed for the investigation of surface phenomena. The basis of the method involves two mutually opposed effects – the change in the surface tension of the solid when its potential relative to a flowing medium is altered and the change in the potential on elastic deformation of the solid. The experimental technique, certain problems of the theory of the method, and examples of its employment are described.
