Abstract:
Information is presented on the preparation of triptycene, its homologues, and substituted derivatives. The spectroscopic, X-ray, optical, and other physical properties of these compounds are discussed. A systematic account is given of the behaviour of substituents located at a bridgehead, and of the differing reactivities of α- and β-positions in the aromatic rings on nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution. Reactions involving opening of the bridge system, the polarographic reduction of triptycenequinones, and the catalytic hydrogenation of triptycene are considered.
