Formation of Donor–Acceptor Complexes

Abstract: Results are summarised for the main principles governing the formation of complexes of type σn, νn (of halogens, metal halides, and organometallic compounds with various amines, ethers, and sulphides). The dipole moments and the heats of formation of the complexes are examined as the most important parameters characterising the properties of donor-acceptor bonds. Methods of determining these parameters are analysed.
Special attention is paid to the character of the relation between the degree of charge transfer and the energy of intermolecular bonds.
Two aspects of the problem of the donor properties of amines, ethers, and sulphides – the effect of molecular structure on the donor properties of the heteroatom, and the conditions for overlap of orbitals involved in the formation of donor–acceptor bonds – are discussed.
A method for determining the energy of pπ-conjugation in aromatic compounds containing a heteroatom is briefly described.
