Abstract: The state of research on the catalytic liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2- and 3-thiolene 1,1-dioxides to thiolane 1,1-dioxide is analysed. Data on the activities and selectivities of Group VIII metals and their complexes and sulfides, both massive and supported, as well as the reaction conditions and hydrogenation mechanisms are considered. The causes of the deactivation of catalysts in the synthesis of thiolane 1,1-dioxide and procedures for increasing their resistance to sulfur are described. Certain general problems of the resistance of hydrogenation catalysts to sulfur are discussed. The bibliography includes 130 references.
