Retro-aldol processes in steroid chemistry

Abstract: This review is devoted to retro-aldol reactions in steroid chemistry. The mechanism of the two-centred inversion of the C/D ring junction is discussed, and its application to the synthesis of cardioaglycones (aglycones of cardioglycosides) outlined. Some stereochemical aspects of introducing a functionalised side chain at C₁₇ is also examined. The bibliography includes 56 references.
