Abstract: The results of original studies on the mechanism of formation of macromolecules in ionic systems are discussed. Amongst these are polymerisation involving living carbocation chains, cationic processes that occur via the activation of a monomer, anionic polymerisation initiated by aluminium and zinc porphyrins, group transfer polymerisation, and polymerisation of olefins using homogeneous Ziegler–Natta catalysts that exhibit high activity. The bibliography includes 76 references.
