Abstract:
A new type of laser resonator is proposed: It is a ring resonator with a rotating field. It differs from other types of resonator by the rotation of the electromagnetic field through some angle after each pass to the active medium. This rotation ensures averaging of the transverse optical inhomogeneity in the laser resonator. Such averaging is demonstrated for a ruby laser. The proposed resonator can be used in other types of laser with inhomogeneous active media.
