Abstract:
Equations describing the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in an active medium and the rate equations for population inversion are used in an analysis of the mechanism of mode self-locking in a laser excited by bombardment with electrons. It is shown that for a certain excess over the threshold and for resonator lengths exceeding a certain minimum value the spontaneous noise fluctuations are transformed into ultrashort pulses as a result of a nonlinear interaction with the amplifying medium.
