Estimate of the losses of modes formed as a result of refraction effects

Abstract: Estimates are obtained of the losses of modes formed in the region of monotonic variation of the refractive index in a specific case for which a fairly rigorous solution can be obtained. An analysis is made of the relationship between the concept of radiative losses of such modes and the concept of the coefficient of refraction losses used by other authors.
