Abstract:
An investigation is made of the ionization of air by x rays emitted from a high-temperature region of the interaction between a laser pulse and a target. The role of the various ionization mechanisms is determined and it is found that at a distance of several centimeters from the target the degree of ionization of air reaches its maximum value when the pressure in the chamber is ~0.1 Torr and the laser radiation intensity is ~1013 W/cm2.
