Abstract: Self-modulation regimes of the first kind are examined theoretically for an arbitrary detuning of the generation frequency from the center of gain line and for arbitrary relations between the moduli and phases of the backscattering coefficients. The cases of in-phase and out-of-phase self-modulation of the intensities of the counterpropagating waves are considered. The solutions derived here can be used to calculate the characteristics of self-modulation oscillations over broad ranges of the parameter values of solid-state ring lasers. The rate of the thermal drift of the self-modulation frequency in an Nd:YAG solid-state ring laser with a monolithic cavity is estimated. The inverse problem is also solved; i.e., equations are derived for determining the moduli and phases of the coefficients of the coupling of the counterpropagating waves from the characteristics of the self-modulation oscillations.
