Reminiscing about the early years of the X-ray laser

Abstract: To put the development of the X-ray laser in historic context, this paper presents some of the motivation and history of the development of the X-ray laser from the perspective of a scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where the first X-ray laser was demonstrated in the early 1980s using a nuclear device as the driver.
