Abstract: We report the results of experimental and numerical studies of the maximum length of multi-span DP-QPSK DWDM communication lines (channel rate of 100 Gbit s-1) with 100-kmlong uniform and combined spans. The use of the combined spans (50 km of SSMF fibre and 50 km of NZDSF fibre) has allowed the maximum line length to be increased up to 6700 km, which is 60% higher than in the case of homogeneous SSMF- and NZDSF-based spans.

Keywords: coherent communication lines, polarisation division multiplexing, numerical modelling, nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
