Optical pulse generator for a fast digital data link

Abstract: A description is given of an otpical pulse generator suitable for a wide-band pulse-code-modulated communication system. The generator includes a mode-locked helium-neon laser. The mode locking is due to loss modulation inside the resonator. Use is also made of the spontaneous mode locking, which makes it possible to reduce considerably the excitation power of a KDP modulator. Conditions ensuring stable generation of pulses are derived for the active mode locking and for the stabilized self-mode-locking.
