Influence of thermoelastic stresses on self-focusing of quasicontinuous radiation

A. A. Vigasin, A. P. Sukhorukov

Abstract: A calculation is made of the induced optical anisotropy of a dielectric plate and of the bending of its flat faces due to thermoelastic stresses resulting from inhomogeneous heating of the plate by a laser beam. These effects result in the depolarization of the beam transmitted by the plate, reduction of the self-focusing length, and splitting of the geometric focus. Estimates are given of these effects for optical glasses.
