Determination of the stimulated emission cross section from the fall of luminescence in a carbon dioxide laser

Abstract: Rate equations are used to obtain a formula relating the stimulated emission cross section due to a loss of the population of the upper active level of a continuously operating laser. The stimulated emission cross section was determined experimentally for the 00°1–10°0 transition in a carbon dioxide laser, which was 7×10–18 cm2. The empirical Brokaw method was extended to ternary gas mixtures.
