Thermodynamic criterion for predicting the brittleness and plasticity of metals

Abstract: A brief comparative analysis of the various methods of evaluating the brittle fracture of metals is given. A plasticity index for metals is proposed and substantiated, and the relation describing its effect on the relative contraction at rupture is obtained.
