Abstract: The concepts of subcritical and supercritical flows are introduced for the long-wave approximation model describing stationary free-boundary rotational flows of an ideal incompressible fluid. Shear flows of a fluid layer above an uneven bottom are analyzed. Exact solutions describing different flow regimes are constructed, and the flow properties are studied as a function of the flow regime. Flows with backward streamlines are considered.

Keywords: long-wave approximation, shear flow, free boundary, subcritical and supercritical regimes, recirculation zone.
