Abstract: The response of a cylindrical shell to an external dynamic pressure is considered. A distribution of the initial deflection in harmonics is specified, which determines the development of buckling. It is found that at different moments of buckling, the function defining the deflection consists of different harmonics and a dominant harmonic can be identified. The cases of a long shell and a shell of finite length are considered.

Keywords: cylindrical shell, dynamics, compression, harmonics.
