Abstract: This paper presents the results of experimental studies of free convection from a heated wire in water for the two cases where the water temperature is higher or lower than the temperature at which water has maximum density. It is shown that, in the first case, the convective plume formed by heating rises, reaching the free surface. In the second case, the height of the convective plume is limited because water in the plume head reaches maximum density and becomes heavier than the surrounding water.

Keywords: nonmonotonic temperature dependence of water density, free convection, linear heat source.
