Abstract:
Work function distributions along the length and over the hot edge of a cylindrical activated thermionic cathode and the temporal variation of these distributions during 20-h operation of arc discharge at various currents have been determined using the contact potential difference (CPD) method. Results obtained by CPD for the cathode spot agree with the data provided by the thermoelectron method. It is confirmed that metal atoms and ions in the cathode region of discharge exhibit the phenomenon of recycling.
