Abstract: A new approach to studying liquid-solid phase transitions is proposed, which is based on measurements of the shear modulus of a substance using the method of torsional oscillations. An important feature of the proposed method is that it is possible to go over the phase transition temperature in the course of continuous heating, thus monitoring intervals on both sides of this temperature. Results of applying the proposed method to investigations of the melting of ice are presented.
