Abstract: Peculiarities of polarized light propagation in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal in the presence of an electrostatic field disturbing director (unit vector parallel to local optical axis) distribution homogeneity are considered. The analysis was carried out using the quasi-isotropic approximation method of geometrical optics. From common positions approximate equations, their solutions, and analytical expressions for Stokes parameters are obtained. The obtained expressions are used to analyze the spatial evolution of the polarization state of light in the sample, the dependence of the polarization state of the output light on the value of the applied field, as well as the analysis capabilities of such controlled phase plates for different purposes.

Keywords: nematic liquid crystal, light polarization.
