Abstract: The hydroprocessing of various aromatic hydroxy acids (lignin oxidation products) using in situ formed MoOx and WOx catalysts is reported. Direct deoxygenation is the major route over MoOx, while direct deoxygenation and decarboxylation routes occur simultaneously when using WOx. The possibility for the selective production of phenol, cyclohexane, and xylenes is demonstrated.

Keywords: hydrodeoxygenation, lignin, aromatic acid, phenols, molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide.
