Abstract: The synthesis of hexacyanocyclopropane (HCCP) 8 has been carried out for the first time by reaction of tetracyanoethylene 1 with tert-butyl hypochlorite 5 in a water–l,4-dioxane system. The structure of HCCP has been determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study of an HCCP·3(l,4-dioxane) adduct.
