Abstract: Photorefractive properties of nematic liquid–crystal cells with photoconductive orienting layers are investigated. A new mechanism is proposed based on the resonant interaction of transition and quasi-stationary domain structures with the optical interference field. A two-order-of-magnitude increase in the diffraction efficiency of gratings under resonant conditions is obtained.
