Abstract: Optical properties of a system of metallic nanoparticles in a dielectric matrix are studied. An analytic form of the dielectric function for a metallic particle having the shape of a parallelepiped is used to estimate quantum effects. The absorption coefficient in composite materials containing particles of various metals in various matrices is calculated, and a comparison with available experimental data is performed.
