Simulation of electric fields in the presence of rods with rounded upper ends

Abstract: The influence of the parameters of the conducting rods with rounded upper ends on the maximal levels of the electric field strength is analyzed with the help of the proposed mathematical model for describing electric fields in the presence of curvilinear interfaces between the media. It is shown how the ratio of the height to the diameter of the rods simulating the lightning conductors affects the levels of maximal field strength. This analysis has made it possible to determine the conditions for the formation of a counter leader from the surface objects of various heights in a thunderstorm situation.
