Application of the penalized wall function method to numerical modeling the flow around an airfoil

N. A. Klyuev

Abstract: The paper presents the penalized wall function method with dynamic exchange location adaptation, which expands the applicability of the approach to turbulent flows in the presence of a pressure gradient, including those with boundary layer separation. The method has a fully differential formulation based on a generalized characteristic-based volume penalization method. A new strategy for exchange location adaptation is proposed and takes into account pressure gradient, friction and local grid resolution. The advantages of the new formulation are demonstrated using the flow problem around a NACA 0012 airfoil.

Keywords: turbulent flow, penalized wall function, flows with separation and reattachment.
