Abstract: The mechanism of excitation of plasma oscillations in solids by the total external reflection of X-rays is considered. It is shown that the main role in the excitation of plasmons in solids is played by slow electrons, which, due to the secondary-electron amplification in thin surface layers of a solid, participate in multielectron emission in the form of electron packets. For silicon carbide, a qualitative calculation of the number of slow secondary electrons generated by X-ray photoelectrons is carried out

Keywords: plasmon, plasma oscillations, electron, electron packet, quantum yield.
