Abstract: On the basis of the “combustion front stoppage” procedure features are studied for structure formation in a mixed SHS-system titanium–aluminum–carbon promising for creating porous cermets. It is established that combustion of this mixture may occur in two different regimes, and at the base of thermal abnormality of the combustion regime is a system of metals with considerably differing melting temperatures. Initial conditions for realizing possible regimes, and the nature and sequence of physicochemical processes for structure formation are found. The role of titanium particle fineness and the existence of specific mechanisms for carbide formation in a high-temperature regime, and also the effect of combustion regime on the structure of the final product are demonstrated.
